The Age of Stupid (Global Premiere)
Date: 21 & 22 September 2009
Location: Worldwide satellite premiere from New York
Following its record-breaking UK “Green Carpet” premiere earlier this year, in September 2009 THE AGE OF STUPID will go global. Featuring screenings of the critically-acclaimed film and a unique package of live link ups, events kick-off in New York and across North America on 21st September, followed by a global presentation on 22 September. Arts Alliance Media will launch the film in up to 40 territories worldwide, including countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and Latin America.
THE AGE OF STUPID stars Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055, watching "archive" footage from 2008 and asking: why didn't we stop climate change while we had the chance? It has been described by the media and politicians alike as of vital importance and essential viewing to anyone who cares about the survival of our planet.
"The most powerful piece of cultural discourse on climate change ever produced." - Mark Lynas, author of "Six Degrees: Our Future on a Hotter Planet"
"I thought the Age of Stupid was an incredibly powerful account of the effects of climate change, the urgency, of climate change and the reasons we must act as quickly as possible." Ed Miliband, UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change.
The New York premiere and subsequent global launch events will be the world’s biggest ever simultaneous premiere of a documentary: people from across the planet will be able to see the film and take part in live debate in the crucial run up to the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December, where the successor to the Kyoto treaty will be decided. Special live satellite link ups will include a performance by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke; scientists in the Arctic and Himalayas and participation from A-list celebrities and world leaders.
The premiere will take place in a solar cinema tent in New York’s Winter Garden in downtown Manhattan, with high profile guests arriving by rowing boat and low carbon transport before making their way up the green-carpet. The New York premiere will be totally solar-powered and will result in just 1% of the carbon emissions of a traditional film premiere.
THE AGE OF STUPID is directed by Franny Armstrong (McLibel), produced by Lizzie Gillett and Oscar-winning John Battsek (One Day in September). It was produced independently with a ‘crowd-funded’ budget of £450,000 and stars Oscar –nominee Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, asking:
“Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?”
